After eight months of inactivity, Riley returned to NXT on January 27, 2016, sporting a longer beard and hairstyle. He defeated Bull Dempsey in a winnable effort, and turned heel for the first-time since 2011. He was defeated in the following 3 weeks by Tye Dillinger, who won back-to-back matches. Apollo Crews defeated him on the 31st episode of NXT. Riley was in his final WWE match on May 11, when he was defeated at the ring by Shinsuke Nagamura.

Riley, along with many other wrestlers, was released by his WWE contract on May 6, 2016.

Riley won a rare victory in NXT’s May 2 episode when he teamed up with Tyson Kidd and beat Johnny Curtis and JTG. He returned to television after a long absence. In a World Heavyweight Championship Money in the Bank qualifier against Dolph Ziggler on the July 3 episode. It was a disappointing effort. After a distraction by Chris Jericho’s commentary, Riley defeated Ziggler with a rollup to end his losing streak in singles on the August 6 episode. Riley announced on September 21 that he would be undergoing knee and elbow surgery. Riley joined Derrick Bateman in January 2013 to participate in the NXT Tag Team Championship Tournament. The Miz lashed out at Riley for not being there at Extreme Rules on the previous night, when The Miz lost the WWE Championship match to Cena. Riley was present with The Miz at the Over the Limit pay per view and tried to help The Miz win the “I Quit” match against Cena. However, The Miz failed and lost the WWE Championship. The Miz immediately rejected The Miz’s request to have another WWE Championship match on May 23, and The Miz blamed him. Riley attacked The Miz and turned his face. The next week, Michael Cole announced that Riley was rehired as the Anonymous Raw General Manager. He then returned to Raw as he was not eligible to be drafted due to his contract with The Miz and not WWE. After an argument Riley attacked Cole before running away from The Miz, who tried to attack him.

Raw’s August 1 episode featured Riley and Dolph Ziggler in a fight. It began with a verbal confrontation. Ziggler and Riley faced off in the next week’s Raw, with Riley winning by disqualification following Vickie Guerrero (Ziggler’s manager) slapping him. Raw’s August 15 episode saw Riley lose to Jack Swagger because Guerrero interfered with Swagger’s management. Swagger was distracted at ringside by Guerrero, Ziggler and Riley when Swagger lost to Riley in a rematch. Riley participated in the Night of Champions match, which saw Swagger, Ziggler and John Morrison compete for the United States Championship. Ziggler won his title.
