Riley revealed that he was returning to wrestling via his Instagram in May 2019.
- 2016
After eight months of inactivity, Riley returned to NXT on January 27, 2016, sporting a longer beard and hairstyle. He defeated Bull Dempsey in a winnable effort, and turned heel for the first-time since 2011. He was defeated in the following 3 weeks by Tye Dillinger, who won back-to-back matches. Apollo Crews defeated him on the 31st episode of NXT. Riley was in his final WWE match on May 11, when he was defeated at the ring by Shinsuke Nagamura.
Riley, along with many other wrestlers, was released by his WWE contract on May 6, 2016.

In late 2014 and early 2015. Riley began a Twitter campaign using the hashtag #FreeRiley to try to get management to book him in-ring competition. His last televised match in 2013 was in 2013. Riley defeated CJ Parker on March 11, after a storyline that saw him being bullied on commentary by Kevin Owens, NXT Champion. Owens threatened to end his career after calling Riley the “dumbest man in NXT” and calling him the “dumbest man in NXT”. Wrestlemania 31’s Riley participated in the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal, but was defeated by Damien Mizdow. Riley was attacked by Kevin Owens during an NXT taping, where Owens kayfabe inflicted a knee injury. Riley was scheduled for surgery on May 1 to correct the degenerative arthritis that had already occurred in his knee.

Riley lost 14 matches in 2012 to Heath Slater, Lord Tensai, and Brodus Clay. The Miz eliminated Riley as the first entrant to the 2012 Royal Rumble. Riley won a rare victory in NXT’s May 2 episode when he teamed up with Tyson Kidd and beat Johnny Curtis and JTG. He returned to television after a long absence. In a World Heavyweight Championship Money in the Bank qualifier against Dolph Ziggler on the July 3 episode. It was a disappointing effort. After a distraction by Chris Jericho’s commentary, Riley defeated Ziggler with a rollup to end his losing streak in singles on the August 6 episode. Riley announced on September 21 that he would be undergoing knee and elbow surgery. Riley joined Derrick Bateman in January 2013 to participate in the NXT Tag Team Championship Tournament. The two were defeated in the first round by Leo Kruger and Kassius Ohno. In a brawl that closed out the show, Riley made his first television appearance in five months on Raw’s January 21 episode. Riley was next seen on Main Event’s April 17th episode. He competed in an 11-man battle royal for the Intercontinental Championship number one contender. He survived until Primo eliminated him.

Riley was part of the 2011 Supplemental Draft, which took place on April 26th. He was then moved to the SmackDown label, seperating him from The Miz. Riley made his debut on SmackDown’s April 29 episode. He interrupted Randy Orton and was then given an RKO. Riley was drafted but continued to appear on Raw with The Miz. The Miz lashed out at Riley for not being there at Extreme Rules on the previous night, when The Miz lost the WWE Championship match to Cena. Riley was present with The Miz at the Over the Limit pay per view and tried to help The Miz win the “I Quit” match against Cena. However, The Miz failed and lost the WWE Championship. The Miz immediately rejected The Miz’s request to have another WWE Championship match on May 23, and The Miz blamed him. Riley attacked The Miz and turned his face. The next week, Michael Cole announced that Riley was rehired as the Anonymous Raw General Manager. He then returned to Raw as he was not eligible to be drafted due to his contract with The Miz and not WWE. After an argument Riley attacked Cole before running away from The Miz, who tried to attack him.
Raw’s August 1 episode featured Riley and Dolph Ziggler in a fight. It began with a verbal confrontation. Ziggler and Riley faced off in the next week’s Raw, with Riley winning by disqualification following Vickie Guerrero (Ziggler’s manager) slapping him. Raw’s August 15 episode saw Riley lose to Jack Swagger because Guerrero interfered with Swagger’s management. Swagger was distracted at ringside by Guerrero, Ziggler and Riley when Swagger lost to Riley in a rematch. Riley participated in the Night of Champions match, which saw Swagger, Ziggler and John Morrison compete for the United States Championship. Ziggler won his title. Riley sustained a serious hip injury in October that rendered him inactive for several days. Riley appeared on Superstars for the rest of 2011, defeating Drew McIntyre, JTG, and other celebrities.
